Hello! Back in February I got an email one Friday afternoon inviting me to be a speaker at the TEDxPiscataquaRiver event “On the Edge” in Portsmouth, NH. I was excited mostly because the person invited me had seen me give a science talk last year at the Benthic Ecology Meeting. What’s so exciting about this? Well, while it’s flattering to be considered a good speaker, it’s even more flattering to have people think your research is interesting, too. Personally as a scientist, that means so much to me.
I’ve done storytelling and given science lectures, but this TEDx talk was a great way of melding storytelling aspects with some science information about an issue I care about. While this doesn’t get into the nitty gritty details of my particular research, it lays down the foundation for why I do what I do.

It was a lot of fun and I really appreciate the work the organizers and other speakers put into the show. I had a lot of people coming up to me afterwards asking me environmental questions I couldn’t necessarily answer. More importantly, they wanted to know what they could do. People are hungry for information about what’s going on. One suggestion on sustainable seafood is to check out Fish Watch, but I think more than anything we need to develop a culture that values sustainability in our resources.
